Absolutely delighted to offer an oolong tea made from a purple leaf cultivar in Arunachal Pradesh. It was on our list for a long time and we are happy to list it after finally sourcing an exceptional batch a while back. Oolongs from this region have always been top notch and this just adds to the collection.
The dry leaf has a grassy aroma with a sweet undertone. Upon placing it on heated teaware, we can notice a berry like aroma with honey and brown sugar sweetness. The first brew has the same characters you notice in the leaf aroma, grassy with a honey sweet finish along with hints of red berries. After pouring the first steep, the leaf comes to life and the wet leaf aroma resembles berries, honey, brown sugar and custard apple, none of them overwhelming but all of them contributing to the unique experience. The second steep is slightly earthy, with taste similar to petrichor and has a slight hint of fresh cut grass as well, on the finish and in the aftertaste, you can notice distinct Indian jujube notes. On the third steep, there are notes of ripe custard apple and jujube. The fourth infusion brings a lemongrass like note along with the base notes of fresh cut grass and honey. Apart from the taste, the deep green and purple leaves are a delight to watch unfurl. This is a very versatile tea and suited more to gong fu style brewing and takes very low to very high temperatures and ratios well, brewing this is going to be very interesting for sure! We hope you enjoy this find from one of the most beautiful corners of India!
